There are two primary ways to take your caravan or motorhome across the Channel:

  • Ferries: Several ferry routes operate from the UK to mainland Europe, such as Dover to Calais, Portsmouth to Bilbao, or Hull to Rotterdam. Ferries are a great option if you want a relaxed crossing with access to onboard facilities.

  • Eurotunnel: The Eurotunnel is a faster option, taking just 35 minutes from Folkestone to Calais. However, it may be more expensive than some ferry options, depending on the time of travel and vehicle size.

Ferries to Spain

If you are traveling directly to Spain, there are several ferry options that allow you to bypass France and head straight to your destination:

  • Brittany Ferries: Offers routes from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander and Bilbao, providing a more relaxed journey compared to driving through France.

  • DFDS Seaways: Occasionally operates seasonal routes to Spain.

  • P&O Ferries: While not directly sailing to Spain, they offer options that connect to other European ferry routes.

Taking a ferry to Spain can be a great option if you want to avoid long road journeys through France and prefer a more comfortable, scenic crossing with onboard amenities such as cabins, restaurants, and entertainment.

Toll Roads in Europe

Toll roads are a key consideration when planning your European road trip, as different countries have different systems:

France

  • French motorways (Autoroutes) are mostly tolled. You can pay by cash, card, or use an electronic toll tag (e.g., Télépéage Liber-t for seamless access).

  • Some scenic routes, like the Route Nationale, are toll-free but may take longer.

Spain

  • Spain has a mix of toll and toll-free roads (Autopistas vs. Autovías).

  • Many toll roads (AP-routes) have high fees but can save time, while A-routes are toll-free alternatives.

Italy

  • The Autostrada network in Italy is mostly tolled, with fees based on distance traveled.

  • You can pay with cash, card, or via an electronic toll system called Telepass.

Germany

  • Germany is famous for its toll-free Autobahns, but note that some cities require an emissions sticker (Umweltplakette), which must be purchased in advance.

  • Some motorhome users may be subject to a MAUT (truck toll) if their vehicle exceeds 7.5 tons.

Switzerland & Austria

  • Both countries require a vignette (prepaid toll sticker) for motorway travel.

  • Austria also has additional tolls for certain tunnels and passes. including the Brenner Pass

Portugal

  • Portugal uses electronic toll roads, where payments must be arranged online or via rental transponders.

Essential Travel Tips

  1. Driving Laws & Regulations:

    • Always check the specific driving laws of the country you're visiting (e.g., speed limits, required equipment like warning triangles and breathalyzers).

    • Right-hand driving is the norm in most of Europe.

  2. Documents You Need:

    • A valid UK driving licence (an International Driving Permit may be required in some countries).

    • Your vehicle's V5C logbook.

    • European breakdown cover and travel insurance.

    • A UK sticker on your vehicle instead of the old GB sticker.

    • Your caravan or motorhome insurance documents.

  3. Low Emission Zones (LEZs):

    • Many European cities have Low Emission Zones requiring a permit or sticker.

    • Check country-specific rules before driving into major cities.

  4. Campsites & Overnight Parking:

    • France allows overnight parking at Aires, which are designated motorhome stops.

    • Many countries have well-equipped campsites that require advance booking in peak seasons.

  5. Fuel & LPG Availability:

    • Fuel is generally cheaper in some European countries compared to the UK.

    • LPG refills may require an adapter, as connections differ across Europe.

Final Thoughts

Exploring mainland Europe in your caravan or motorhome is an exciting adventure filled with breathtaking scenery, cultural experiences, and the freedom of the open road.
