Scratches on caravan and motorhome windows are all too common. Whether it’s from tree branches on a tight pitch, gravel kicked up on the road, or cleaning with the wrong cloth, those fine lines and scuffs can really spoil the view — and the look — of your leisure vehicle. Thankfully, most light to moderate scratches can be removed or significantly reduced with a bit of care and the right products.
What Type of Windows Do You Have?
Most caravan and motorhome windows are made from acrylic (plastic), not glass. This means they’re lighter and more flexible, but also more prone to scratching. Because of this, it’s important to use products specifically designed for acrylic or plastic windows, not standard glass polish.
What You’ll Need:
Acrylic window polish or plastic scratch remover
Microfibre cloths (clean and soft)
Masking tape (optional)
A polishing pad or sponge (optional)
Water spray bottle
Step-by-Step Guide to Removing Scratches:
1. Clean the Window First
Before you begin, thoroughly clean the window to remove any dirt or grit. Use a soft microfibre cloth and a gentle cleaner. Rinse well and dry completely.
2. Identify the Depth of the Scratch
Run your fingernail lightly across the scratch. If your nail catches, it’s deeper and may not completely disappear but can still be improved. Light surface scratches usually polish out fully.
3. Apply the Polish
Use a specialist acrylic polish (such as Fenwicks Windowize or similar). Apply a small amount to a clean microfibre cloth or polishing pad. Work in small sections at a time.
4. Polish in Circular Motions
Gently polish the scratched area using small, circular movements. Apply even pressure but don’t scrub too hard. Reapply polish if needed. For best results, keep the area slightly damp with a light mist of water.
5. Buff and Inspect
After polishing for a few minutes, use a clean, dry microfibre cloth to buff the area. Check your progress. Repeat steps 3–5 if necessary until the scratch is reduced or removed.
6. Dealing with Deeper Scratches
For deeper marks, you might need to use a plastic restorer kit with a fine abrasive or very light sanding compound (always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully). If in doubt, or if damage is extensive, consult a professional.
Tips for Preventing Future Scratches:
Use only soft cloths or mitts when cleaning windows
Rinse off any grit before wiping
Avoid dry-wiping dusty windows
Park away from overhanging trees or bushes
Fit protective window covers when in storage
Final Thoughts
Scratches might be inevitable with regular touring, but they don’t have to be permanent. With the right polish and a little patience, your caravan or motorhome windows can be looking crystal clear again in no time — ready for your next adventure!
