1. Clear the Interior

  • Remove Personal Items: Take out everything that’s not permanently installed (clothes, toiletries, food, electronics, etc.). Empty out cupboards, fridge, and drawers.

  • Check for Forgotten Items: Check under beds, seats, and in hidden storage compartments to ensure you haven’t left anything behind.

  • Pack Bedding: Fold or store any bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows) and pack them neatly for future use.

  • Tidy Up: Give the interior a quick tidy-up—put cushions back in place, fold any blankets or throws, and wipe down surfaces.

2. Turn Off Appliances and Utilities

  • Fridge: Switch off the fridge and clean out any food. Leave the door open to prevent any unpleasant odors.

  • Stove & Oven: Turn off any gas appliances, including the stove, oven, or heating systems.

  • Water System: Turn off the water pump, and drain the fresh water tank (if necessary). If you’ve been using the toilet, make sure the cassette is emptied and cleaned.

  • Lights: Turn off all lights to prevent draining the caravan battery.

3. Empty the Waste Tanks

  • Gray Water Tank: Empty any gray water (sink or shower) into the designated disposal area. If you have a portable tank, take it to the waste station.

  • Toilet Cassette: Empty the cassette toilet at the proper disposal point. Clean the cassette thoroughly with water and deodorizer, and make sure the seal is in good condition.

4. Close Windows, Vents, and Roof Lights

  • Windows: Ensure all windows are securely closed and locked to avoid water ingress or breakage during travel.

  • Roof Vents: Double-check that roof lights and vents are properly shut to keep the interior dry and secure.

5. Pack and Secure the Exterior

  • Awnings and Canopies: Roll up your awning or canopy, fold it neatly, and pack it away. Make sure it’s dry to avoid mildew.

  • Outdoor Gear: Pack away any outdoor furniture, mats, or equipment (chairs, tables, BBQs, etc.) and store them in designated compartments.

  • Water Hose and Electrical Cables: Coil the water hose and any electrical hookup cables neatly to avoid damage. Store them in the designated compartments to keep them organized.

6. Disconnect Utilities

  • Electric Hook-Up: Disconnect the electric hookup from the caravan and store the cable. Check that there’s no power flowing to the caravan before leaving the site.

  • Fresh Water Hose: Disconnect and store the water hose.

  • Gas: If you’ve used gas for cooking or heating, turn off the gas bottle valve. If you have a spare, consider swapping out the bottle.

7. Check the Caravan for Damage

  • Walk Around: Do a final walk-around of the caravan to check for any damage or issues that need attention before traveling (loose items, dents, or broken parts).

  • Check Tires: Inspect the tires once more for damage or deflation, and check the tire pressure.

  • Tow Bar & Hitch: Ensure the hitch is properly locked onto the tow bar, and that the safety chains, breakaway cable, and electrical connection are securely in place.

8. Secure the Caravan

  • Stabilizing Legs: Raise and retract the stabilizing legs or jacks and store them securely.

  • Hitch Lock: If you're leaving the caravan on-site or storing it, lock the hitch for extra security.

  • Check for Loose Items: Ensure that any items inside the caravan are secured to prevent them from shifting while driving.

9. Final Sweep of the Campsite

  • Clean the Site: Pick up any litter, remove your tent pegs, and leave the site as you found it. Some campsites may require you to clean the area before leaving.

  • Lock Up: Make sure the campsite gate is properly locked (if applicable), and that you’ve gathered everything you need.

10. Prepare for the Journey Home

  • Tow Vehicle: Make sure your vehicle is hitched correctly, and that you’ve checked all the lights and indicators on both the vehicle and the caravan.

  • Retract Antenna and TV Dish: If you have an external antenna or satellite dish, make sure it’s fully retracted and secured.

11. Final Check

  • Before driving off, give the caravan and tow vehicle one last look to make sure everything is packed away, locked, and safe for travel. If you're not in a hurry, do a quick walk-around to check for any overlooked items.

By following this step-by-step process, you’ll ensure that your caravan is properly packed away, and that you’re ready for a smooth journey home and your next adventure!
